Which Ultrasound Mid-Air Haptic Feedback Technique Should We Use for Contact Rendering in Virtual Reality?

Abstract

Ultrasound mid-air haptic devices allow the creation of a light haptic feedback in mid-air using focused ultrasound waves. They are particularly interesting due to the amount of control they provide over the feedback, and because they can generate haptic cues in a very natural way, without the need to equip anything on the participant. These devices are particularly suitable for virtual reality interactions, as they can add a sense of touch to these mostly touch-deprived environments, whether it is to help accomplish tasks or to improve immersion. This work focuses on mid-air contact rendering between a user and a virtual object. In particular, we developed several visual and haptic feedback techniques to provide contact cues when a user’s finger collides with a virtual object. We aim to find the preferred haptic feedback for each of the visual rendering techniques.
